The Medical Assistant AAS program will train students, under the supervision of physicians, for an occupation in administrative functions in a healthcare clinic, front office procedures, and clinical aspects in busy healthcare facilities and physician offices. Includes instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, medical law and ethics, patient psychology and communications. The medical assistant performs a variety of clinical and administrative duties. Administrative duties may include: billing, coding, correspondence and reports, insurance matters, office accounts and chart review. Front Office Procedures may include: answering phones, scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, collecting fees, and pulling patient records. Clinical duties may include: assisting physicians and preparing patients for examinations and treatments; taking and recording vital signs and medical histories; performing certain diagnostic tests; preparing, administering and documenting medications; collecting and processing specimens.

- Pass a background & drug screen - through the authorized company (contact information for the company will be handed out to students by October 15th each year)
- Completed physical form - the physical needs completed during spring term prior to starting MA 118
- A current "Health Care Providers" CPR card from the American Heart Association
- Complete the following immunizationsa. Measles, Mumps and Rubella titer or proof of
2 MMR vaccines
- Varicella titer or proof of 2 Varicella vaccines
- TDap completed within the last 10 years
- Hepatitis B (series of 3) plus a positive titer
- TB skin test documented wither the following ways:
- 2 step TB skin test OR
- QuantiFERON - TB Gold blood test (QFT-G)
- All MA courses must be completed with a C+ or higher. All other courses must be completed and have an average GPA of 2.0 or higher.

duties. Successful completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree as a Medical
Assistant prepares a student for a career as a Certified Medical Assistant and for

TVCC currently has the only program in the Treasure Valley offering Medical Assistant classes online. Having classes online allows students to continue work and does not take them away from their family responsibilities. Although our Medical Assistant classes are offered online, we still provide direct access to instructors for help in person or over the web. TVCC Medical Assistant program will have a few "Live Class" days to practice skills such as vital checks, blood draws, and injections.
There is no application process to start TVCC's MA program. Just apply for Admission to TVCC and then we can help you get signed up for classes. It is easy to get started; if you have questions please contact our MA Coordinator (contact information above).
The program is designed for both part-time and full-time students. If a student is planning on being a full-time student, the MA certificate program can be completed in one year. We also encourage students to work towards their AAS degree which is an additional year after the MA certificate program completion.
Medical Assistants typically work in medical offices performing both front office
and clinical tasks. Working as a Medical Assistant you will get to work with physicians
and other clinic staff to provide care to the community. There are many opportunities

Treasure Valley Community College is offering Medical Assistant Courses throughout the year. Our one-year Certified Medical Assistant program is the first part of our the two-year Associate of Applied Science degree.
Upon successful completion of the one-year program, students will be prepared to take the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam from the National Healthcare Association and become a Certified Medical Assistant, as well as have the skills needed to conduct all office duties within a clinic or doctor's office setting.
AAS - Associate of Applied Science
This is a two year program, designed to allow a student to become a Certified Medical Assistant in year one and then continue on to obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree. This program is designed to ensure a graduate can work both the front office and the back office of a medical office.
1YR - Certificate (One Year)
This is a one-year State certificate that allows a student to become a Certified Medical Assistant in Oregon.

INTRO TO MEDICAL ASSISTING
Focuses on administrative skills performed by the Medical Assistant in the ambulatory care setting. The course provides an introduction to the medical assistant profession, examines medical law and ethics, principles of confidentiality and medical office function. Introduces the medical assisting students to learn practical applications of billing medical insurance both manually and electronically. The course is designed to instruct the student in all phases of the administrative medical assistant.

MA 115 OH
PHLEBOTOMY
Focus of this course is to demonstrate appropriate blood specimen procurement techniques using vacutainer, syringe, 'winged infusion'/butterfly with syringe and capillary puncture methods. Other specifics of the blood specimen testing requirements, such as collection into the correct evacuated tube (additive), specimen handling procedures, and collection documentation are also covered; while assuring safe, confidential and professional environment for the patient, and as the phlebotomy technician. Practical experience which will include a minimum of 30 successful venipunctures and 10 successful capillary sticks. Required: Students must be admitted into the current MA cohort, or instructor consent. Prerequisites: MA 112, MA 117 with a grade of C+ or better. Co-requisite: MA 116

INTRODUCTION TO MEDICATIONS
Introduces the medical assisting students to pharmacology and medication administration, including review of basic mathematical equations and medications calculations. It is designed to give students the fundamentals of medications and the administration of medications essential to the practice of medical assisting. Under supervision within the ambulatory care setting, the student will apply both administrative and clinical knowledge and practices as attained within the Medical Assisting course curriculum.
