TVCC’s commitment to Learning and Community
Beyond the Classroom: TVCC’s Commitment to Learning and Community
It’s already the fourth week of the quarter, and there’s a lot happening this fall—including a special graduation at the TVCC Corrections Education Center located at the Snake River Correctional Institution (SRCI).
On October 20, the Center hosted a meaningful ceremony recognizing several adults in custody for their educational achievements. This event is one that I look forward to each year because it is truly inspiring to celebrate and recognize the perseverance of individuals who pursue learning while incarcerated.
Through TVCC’s corrections education programs, adults in custody have the opportunity to earn a GED, take ESL courses, work toward college degrees, or gain a certificate in basic construction trades (offered at SRCI only). While not all centers offer college level courses, we are working to make this a reality. Education and a sense of purpose are proven to reduce recidivism, and the faculty and staff at TVCC do an outstanding job of making a lasting impact in the lives of these students – and this impact goes far beyond the classroom.
Like a pebble dropped into a puddle, the ripple effect of one person’s decision to change the trajectory of their lives reaches outward—impacting their future, their families, and their communities. That’s why at TVCC, we believe that providing access to education even within correctional facilities creates opportunities for a hope-filled, purpose-driven, and more promising future—not just for the individual, but for everyone around them.
Did you know that TVCC is the largest provider of corrections education in Oregon? In addition to Snake River Correctional Institution, we also offer programs at:
- Warner Creek Correctional Facility in Lakeview
- Powder River Correctional Facility in Baker City
- Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton
- Two Rivers Correctional Institution in Umatilla
TVCC’s commitment to education reaches far beyond our main campus, and we’re proud to support learning wherever it’s needed most.
Although we’re still in October, November is just around the corner—and that means it’s time to lace up for one of TVCC’s favorite traditions! We’re excited to announce that the Treasure Valley Community College Turkey Trot is back this Thanksgiving Day, November 27.
This is your chance to run, walk, or stroll the 5K before sitting down to enjoy that well-earned holiday meal. Whether you're an avid runner, a casual walker, or just someone who likes to earn their pumpkin pie, this fun community event is for you!
Registration and check-in will begin at 7:00 a.m., and the Trot kicks off at 9:00 a.m. sharp. Early registrants will receive a commemorative t-shirt, so don’t wait too long to sign up.
The Turkey Trot is always a favorite of mine, and I’m grateful to the Athletic Department
for keeping it going year after year. As always, all proceeds will support our cross-country
and track and field teams—so your trot helps our athletes go the distance!  Registration
will open soon so be on the lookout for further details at www.gochuks.com. Bring your family and friends and come support the Chukars.
