New Student Orientation

Public Information Office

On Friday, September 24, over 100 new students attended the TVCC New Student Orientation.  Students and their families were treated to a meet and greet hosted by the TVCC Foundation, followed by a welcome address and informational sessions to learn more about the services TVCC offers. College staff had the opportunity to visit with parents, families, students, and hand out Foundation scholarship information, gift cards, and delicious snacks.  Foundation Executive Director Cathy Yasuda commended Foundation board members Dave Bean and Jaime Grimaldo for helping with the reception along with TVCC President Young and Board of Education member Betty Carter.  Yasuda also expressed her appreciation to Cheryl Cruson from Oregon Trail Hobbies for her contribution of five $10 gift cards as a raffle to attendees.  A special thank you was also provided to Ontario Mayor Riley Hill and Chamber of Commerce CEO John Breidenbach for welcoming everyone to the orientation.  It was a great day and a great introduction to the start of Fall Quarter.

A total of 20 ribbons, including Best of Show, were awarded to five TVCC Caldwell Center art students and their instructor who entered the Canyon County Arts and Hobby Crafts divisions this summer.

The Best of Show rosette with its $20 premium was awarded to summer school art student Madison Wiehl, who also earned three other first and second place ribbons.  A Merit rosette and five first and second place ribbons were awarded to Marilla Hess, who also works at Bridges Coffee shop on campus. Students Ashley Banda and Sindy Heilman earned five ribbons, first through third place, between them.

Art instructor Linda Varnes placed first with a Merit rosette in the Hobby Craft division with her updated  "Homage to 9/11" which has been on display on the second floor of the Caldwell Center.  Her edited book and book cover, The Red Dawn Message (cover photograph by TVCC Art student Drew McGuinn), were awarded two blues. Her collage and floral watercolor earned two seconds.

Congratulations to all the students and Instructor Varnes!
