TVCC Hosts Education Day for Leadership Group

On February 26, participants from the Ontario Chamber of Commerce Leadership group were welcomed by Dr. Dana Young, faculty, staff and students as they visited the TVCC campus. The group heard presentations from several TVCC departments which included a demonstration of the Aviation Program’s flight simulator. Participants were treated to a luncheon and later received a guided campus tour.

Burns Center Coordinator Misti McCanna-Porter traveled to Las Vegas on February 20-23,
2020, for the Far West Popular Culture conference to present a chapter from her Ph.D.
dissertation entitled “Tea, Automations, and Time Machines: Steampunk's Nostalgic
View of Art History."
Misti is currently working toward a Ph.D. in Humanities and Culture with a specialization
in Art History and Popular Culture. Her topic focused on the subculture of Steampunk
and the nostalgic relationship it keeps with historical art movements that inspire
contemporary works produced within this genre. She chose to participate in the Far
West Popular Culture conference (FWPCA) in Las Vegas as a part of her dissertation
program and to bring awareness to how art history still affects contemporary society.
The dissertation project is considered a creative dissertation, in which she does
a project alongside scholarly writing. Misti proposed a series of paintings created
in the Steampunk style, displayed at a culminating art show in the final stages. Presenting
in Las Vegas allowed her to produce a virtual display, discuss a few pieces of her
work, and read one chapter of her dissertation.
Misti is a TVCC alumni and is very familiar with Harney County from having grown up
there. Her goals for the Burns Center are to make community connections and demonstrate
TVCC's ability to assist students with their educational goals.
