The Treasure Valley Community College Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa has been busy fundraising for their upcoming International Convention in April. They recently put on a tamale fundraiser and made nearly 60 dozen tamales for staff, faculty, and community members! Previous to that, the Chapter partnered with Weiser Classic Candy to make caramels, assist with candy packaging, and raffled festive pictures in the store. Phi Theta Kappa students also raised funds by working the valet parking at the Four Rivers Cultural Center’s 25th Annual Center Ball earlier this month.

The Chapter has been working hard and their efforts were recognized.  Just recently, the Chapter earned its 5-star chapter status. This is the first time in 3 years that this status has been awarded to the chapter. Five-star status is earned by completing the Honors in Action and College projects which are directed through the International PTK District.

Lastly, the Omicron Chapter has welcomed a new advisor to the team, Kate Walker. Kate took on the advisor position in December, and is excited to share her knowledge and passions with students, and finish out the year strong with the current PTK officers. TVCC’s Phi Theta Kappa members always appreciate your support and are looking forward to attending the International Convention in Florida!

Alex Emery, TVCC AAS Aviation Technology,
Helicopter Program

Since his first helicopter ride at age 9, Alex Emery knew he wanted to be a pilot.  After researching numerous programs, Alex decided that TVCC was the place for him.  Although nervous, he completed each phase of his training with ease.  Some days were certainly harder than others, but Alex knew quitting was not an option for him.  Alex realized his dream had come true the day he got the “thumbs up” from his instructor and took his first solo flight.  It was on that day a 9-year old’s dream came true – he was a pilot! Upon completion of the program, Alex’s future plans are to work as a flight instructor to build time and later pursue a career in search and rescue.

TVCC will be hosting their Chukar Spirit night on February 20, 2019, the last home game night of the Chukar basketball season. During the night, TVCC will honor its sophomore players, celebrate its current students, and welcome next year’s incoming students.

In anticipation of the games, employees and students will be wearing their best Chukar gear. High school students will also be joining in on the excitement with free admission. In addition, up to $2,500 in college scholarships will be awarded to new students through the TVCC Foundation, the Chukar Booster Association, and TVCC Departments.

“Everyone on-campus wants to show our incoming students what an incredible community and energy we have at TVCC. As we get closer to fall, we want our future Chukars to feel like they’re already a part of our student body,” says Chase Van Weerdhuizen, TVCC Recruiting Coordinator.

Sophomore basketball players who will be honored that night include Tara Chamberlain, Haddee Reynolds, Paige Vorwaller, Carson Bischoff, Savion Henry, and Jaden Vaughn. The women’s game starts at 5:30 PM and the men’s game starts at 7:30 pm.  Both teams will play against Columbia Basin College at the John J. Easly Memorial Gymnasium.

“We would love to pack the gymnasium. I’m looking forward to an exciting environment and personally meeting many current and future Chukars,” says Andy Ward, Athletic Director. “The College welcomes all community members to take part in this exciting night.”
